On-going Progress in a Child Friendly Space

Abstract

This article details the establishment and progress of a Child Friendly Space (CFS) by Rural Oriented Youth Movement (ROYM)-Nepal with the support of Aide à l'Enfance de l'Inde et du Népal (AEIN) following a devastating fire in Matihani Municipality, Mahottari. It highlights the increase in engagement from the initial 25 to 118 children, the activities conducted, and the positive impact on the children’s psycho-social development.

Introduction

On April 12, a catastrophic fire ravaged Jaralhawa and Miya Tole, displacing numerous families. In response, ROYM-Nepal, with support from AEIN, provided immediate relief and recognized the urgent need for a safe space for the affected children. During our visit to the affected area, we observed that the children were the most vulnerable; thus, the need for a child-friendly space was evident.

Methods

A Child Friendly Space (CFS) was established and became operational by May 10, 2023, with the support of AEIN. Initially, when we began the child-friendly space, we had envisioned accommodating twenty-five children, but they were not interested in attending. Over time, however, the number of children our child-friendly space caters to has increased to one hundred and eighteen. This significant increase is attributed to the space working in the best interest of the children. Here, children traumatized by the fire incident can channel their negative emotions, such as fear, anxiety, and stress, through peer sharing and various activities, including painting, singing, dancing, and acting. This approach has ensured their healthy psychosocial development. The space provides an environment where children can learn, play, and socialize safely. In times of crisis, there is often chaos, and parents may not be able to supervise their children adequately. During such times, children are particularly vulnerable to sexual violence and child labor. However, the child-friendly space has been dedicated to protecting these children in a loving and caring environment. In addition to learning, the children are also oriented on personal health and hygiene. AEIN has provided tablets as digital learning tools. The teacher received training on how to use the Magrid learning application—an evidence-based program designed to enhance cognitive development and academic success in children aged 3-6 years—on the tablets. The children are also provided with nutritious food and are constantly receiving counseling services to address their psychological needs. There is active involvement from the children, who participate with high enthusiasm. All these efforts have contributed to boosting their self-esteem and restoring a sense of normalcy.

Results

The CFS has seen a remarkable increase in attendance, indicating its success in meeting the needs of the children. The space has become a haven for learning, playing, and socializing, contributing to the children’s recovery from trauma.

Discussion

The CFS has proven to be a vital resource in the aftermath of the disaster. It has not only provided a safe environment for children but also addressed their educational and psychological needs, fostering resilience and normalcy.

Conclusion

The establishment of the CFS by ROYM-Nepal has been a significant step in supporting the young victims of the fire. The increase in participation and the positive feedback from the community underscore the importance and effectiveness of such initiatives in crisis situations.
